Meet The Staff

Crystal Hollins-
Crystal started the Encinitas Beach Kids program in 2010. Prior to the Beach Kids Program she started and ran the City of Encinitas Junior Lifeguard Program. She began with the City in 1992 and has been at Moonlight Beach every summer since. Many of the past Junior Lifeguards have gone on to volunteer for the programs and several have gone on to become lifeguards and instructors. Crystal has enjoyed watching the programs success as well as seeing the young men and women of the community grow up.  Some of her hobbies include swimming, running, surfing and spending time with her five children.  She considers it a privilege to work with the youth of the community.
 
Paul Giuliano-
Paul was involved with the Junior Lifeguard program for over 15 years and has been with Beach Kids since day one. He played a pivotal role in the success of the Junior Lifeguard program, and is still a lifeguard for the City of Encinitas. He loves surfing and spending time with his wife and son and daughter. He is also a high school teacher at La Costa Canyon. He teaches History and Surf PE. Paul loves to have old students from the high school and Junior Lifeguards stop by and tell him how they are doing and what they have been up to.
 
Austin Wade- 
Austin has been an instructor with Beach Kids and the Encinitas Junior Lifeguard programs for the last eight years. Before that Austin first came to the beach as a nine year old with Encinitas Junior Lifeguard program and has worked his way up the ladder until becoming a lifeguard and instructor for the City of Encinitas. During the remaining parts of the year Austin works for the San Marcos Unified School District as a substitute teacher and is looking for forward to a future position as an Art Teacher at Alvin Dunn Elementary. In addition to teaching, Austin loves the ocean and enjoys surfing, fishing, diving, and anything else that involves the ocean.
 
Kyle DeDiminicantanio-
Kyle started as a nine year old in the Junior Lifeguard program and then began aiding for Junior Lifeguards in 2005. During this time he was also the manager for Lyle's at Moonlight, (the concession stand at Moonlight). After aiding for three years, he began working with the Junior Lifeguards as an instructor full time.  He made the switch to Beach Kids in 2010. When summer ends  Kyle returns to school at CSU Chico, where he will finish his senior year.  He also coaches flag football for 7 and 8 year olds at Chico during the school year.  
 
Kelly Szabo-
Kelly has been a member of our staff for the past six years.  She loves swimming , surfing, running and anything that athletic.  Kelly has the energy of three people and loves teaching kids. During the remainder of the year she is a teacher at Hope Elementary in Carlsbad. Kelly also has two small children and a husband that she adores.
 
Corey Bess-
Corey has been with our staff for the past six years. Before that, he was a lifeguard for the State Parks system and also was an instructor with the Carlsbad Junior Lifeguard program for several years. He has 15 years life guarding and junior lifeguard experience. When he isn't down at the beach he is a Vice Principal in the Encinitas School District. Corey loves summer and is a great volleyball player and spending time at the beach.
Ryan Hargrave-
Ryan is a part timer on our staff. He always brightens everyones day and the kids absolutely LOVE him.  He has over 17 years lifeguarding experience.  He teaches surf lessons and loves to travel the world.  If you come down to Moonlight you will most likely see him in the water surfing.
 
Ty Kaufman
Ty had two years of experience as a Junior Lifeguard and then aided for 3 years before becoming an instructor. Ty just graduated from San Marcos High and will be attending UCLA in the fall with his focus of study still undecided. This will be his second year instructing and he loves every second of it! Ty is also an avid beach volleyball player and chooses to spend most of his free time down at the beach with friends at the Moonlight Beach volleyball courts.
 
Mia Mendola-
Mia started Encinitas Junior Lifeguards at age 9 and went on to become an aide and then an instructor. This is her second summer at Beach Kids and she loves every minute of it. Mia is currently studying at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo working on a degree in Journalism.

Sean Murphy-

Sean was a junior life guard himself three years then soon after he quickly became an aide for 3 years. This is his second year as an instructor with beach kids. He loves sports like playing beach volleyball and soccer along with hanging out at the beach. Sean recently graduated from La Costa Canyon high school and will attend Santa Barbara City College in the fall.

Derek York- 
Derek started out 7 years ago as a Jr. Lifeguard. He became an aide for three years. This will be his second year as an instructor. He enjoys working at beach kids, playing soccer, and hanging out at the beach. In the fall he plans to attend Santa Barbara City College
